This panoramic photograph of Vienna was taken by James Blakeway. Located along the banks of the Danube River and Canals, Vienna, the capital of Austria, is steeped with history and beautiful architecture. Centered prominently in the photograph is the famous St. Stephan's Cathedral, one of the chief Gothic buildings of Europe. Parts of the cathedral are the original 12th-century Romanesque structure, which was destroyed by fire. Rebuilt, it was again burned and partly destroyed in World War II and has since been restored. The city suffered heavy damage in World War II but the character remains much the same after the rebuilding.
