Seattle was awarded an NHL franchise in December, 2018 for the 2021-22 season and brings the total number of NHL teams to 32. Climate Pledge Arena, home of the Kraken, was originally part of the 1962 World’s Fair, and underwent a 1.5 billion dollar redevelopment and renovation which preserved the original exterior and roof which was declared a Seattle Landmark in 2017 and listed on the Washington Heritage Register as well as the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. The arena has a capacity of 17,150 for ice hockey.
